IMPORT EXPORT CODE (IEC)

Import Export Code more commonly known as IEC is a ten digit code number given to an Importer or Exporter by Director General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industries. Any entrepreneur who wishes to import or export something to or from India should have an import export code. Though exporters need not essentially apply for this code, it has become a necessity for exporters to avail some benefits provided. Now a days RBI has made IE Code mandatory to open bank account. Code can be obtained in individual name or on your company’s name. The registration of the Code is governed by The Foreign Trade Act, 1992. Obtaining code itself does not permit one to start importing or exporting, a license and other documents are required, IEC only provide certain benefits.
